Obituary for Charles William Hickson

Charles William Hickson
Framingham, MA

Charles W. Hickson, a lifelong resident of Framingham, died May 19, 2017 at the age of 92. Son of the late Charles Aloysius Hickson and Laura Louise (Stearns) Hickson. Beloved husband of Jean E. (McGowan) Hickson, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Loving father of Kathleen A. Hickson of Nantucket, Michael C. Hickson of Marblehead, and Patricia M. Hickson of Hartford, CT. He was the brother of the late Josephine M. (Hickson) Sannicandro. After graduating from Framingham High School in 1942, Charlie enlisted in the US Navy and successfully completed three tours of duty as an engineer on the submarine USS Segundo in the Pacific. He served from 1943 to 1945. On the GI Bill, he attended Boston College, graduating in 1951 with a BA in Business. After teaching at the Gordon Street School in Framingham, in 1952 he was hired as assistant treasurer at the Framingham Cooperative Bank (now MutualOne Bank), where he embarked on a 54-year career. As a community-minded mortgage lender, Charlie earned a reputation for serving a generation of first-time home buyers and small business people, often judging them on their character over their qualifications on paper. He retired in 2006, after having served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is memorialized by MutualOne Bank through the Charles W. Hickson Scholarship, established in 2015, which is awarded annually to a Framingham high school student headed for college.
